An Impressum service is legal, and for many self-employed people in Germany it's the cleanest way to keep a home address off the internet. What matters is that mail and formal service are actually accepted at the rented address. You can't judge how trustworthy an offer is by its price; you judge it by what happens after a letter gets dropped off.
There's no shortage of providers now. Some charge a few euros a month, others several times that. To help you compare them, we'll cover the legal background first, then give you eight things to check.
What does "c/o" mean in an Impressum?
"c/o" stands for care of. It shows that you're reachable at someone else's address:
Jane Doe c/o Example Address Services GmbH Musterstraße 1, 10117 Berlin
For the delivery person, that means a letter for Jane Doe goes to Example Address Services GmbH's mailbox, and they forward it.
Is a c/o address allowed in an Impressum?
Generally yes, as long as service can actually reach you there. A c/o addition isn't automatically invalid.
The Hamm Higher Regional Court gives useful guidance here. It ruled in 2015 (case no. 27 W 51/15) that a GmbH can even register a business address with a c/o addition in the commercial register, provided the addition helps identify the person authorized to receive mail and doesn't block or hinder delivery. That reasoning transfers well to the Impressum.
Two situations turn problematic:
- Nobody accepts the mail. If there's only a shared mailbox behind the address with no staff or clear arrangement, formal service may never reach you.
- The address is used to hide. Choosing a c/o address specifically to make yourself hard to reach for creditors or courts defeats the Impressum's purpose.
A plain PO box is ruled out either way. More on that in our article on PO boxes in a German Impressum.
Is "buying an Impressum" legal?
Yes, though the phrase is misleading. You're not buying an Impressum, you're renting a business address you're allowed to list in one. You still fill in the rest yourself: name, email, commercial register details where applicable, and VAT ID.
It's legal as long as the address is serviceable and your contract lets you receive mail there. A written agreement with the provider isn't a nice extra, it's your proof.
An example: the self-published author
Picture a crime novelist in Kassel who self-publishes her books. State press law requires an Impressum with an address for the book, and the same goes for her author website. She doesn't want her home address there, for good reason: readers sometimes show up at the door.
She finds two offers. The cheap one advertises "ready in minutes" and asks only for an email address, nothing about who accepts mail, how fast she'd find out, or what happens with a registered letter. The second costs more, requires identity verification, and explains exactly how letters get scanned and how quickly they land in the app.
Six months later, a letter from her distributor arrives with a deadline. With the second provider, she sees it on her phone the same day. With the first, she might only have found out at the next monthly batch forward.
8 checks for a trustworthy Impressum service
1. A real street address, not a PO box
Street, house number, postal code, city. If the address is a PO box or a parcel locker, it won't work for an Impressum.
2. Staff accept the mail
Ask directly: who empties the mailbox? Are registered letters and formal deliveries accepted and signed for? A legitimate provider can answer this without hesitation.
3. A written contract
You should get an agreement granting you use of the address. That contract is also your proof if anyone ever questions it.
4. Identity verification
This sounds like friction, but it's a good sign. Providers renting out business addresses fall under Germany's anti-money-laundering law and have to know who their customers are. One that skips this entirely may not be taking its obligations seriously.
5. Clear rules for handling mail
How fast does mail get logged? Do you get notified? Can you choose whether only the envelope or the contents get scanned? What does forwarding the original cost?
6. Data protection
Your mail contains invoices, official letters, and sometimes health data. Check where scans are stored and whether the provider offers a data processing agreement (DPA).
7. Transparent pricing and terms
Compare more than the monthly fee: minimum term, notice period, scanning allowance, forwarding postage, and any deposit. We cover typical cost factors in What does a business address cost?.
8. What happens after you cancel
Mail keeps arriving after a contract ends. Is there a grace period, forwarding, or a return process? A legitimate provider spells this out in the contract.
Impressum service or virtual office?
An Impressum service is meant for operator identification, for a website, online shop, social media, or a book. If you also need to register a trade or enter a GmbH's seat at that address in the commercial register, you typically need a virtual office with a rental agreement specifically cleared for use as a business seat.
| You need … | The right fit | |---|---| | An Impressum address, protecting your home address | Impressum service | | Mail received digitally as well | Impressum service with a digital mailbox | | Trade registration or a company seat | Virtual office (registered office) |
How Clevver handles this
The Clevver Impressum service gives you a real street address with no c/o addition, a rental agreement, and a digital mailbox. You verify your identity online before you start. Scans sit on servers in Germany, and a DPA is available.
At our own location in Berlin-Mitte, trained staff accept your mail. You decide in the app whether only the envelope or the contents get scanned. Letters arriving by 3pm get logged the same day.
FAQ
Is a c/o address allowed in an Impressum? Yes, as long as service can actually reach you there and the addition doesn't make you harder to find. A plain PO box doesn't qualify either way.
How do I spot an untrustworthy Impressum service? Watch for no information about mail acceptance, no written contract, no identity verification, unclear extra fees, and no stated process for what happens to your mail after you cancel.
Can I register a trade with just an Impressum service? Usually not. Trade registration or a company seat typically requires a virtual office with a rental agreement. Ask the provider beforehand.
Does this apply to Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok too? Yes. Anyone running social media channels commercially in Germany needs an Impressum, under the same address rule. More in Impressum for Instagram and Content Creators.
